Commercial Licensing
MTL Explorer is dual-licensed:
- Open source under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 or later (AGPL-3.0-or-later).
- Commercial under a separate, negotiated license agreement with the copyright holder.

When do you need a commercial license?
You need a commercial license if any of the following apply and you do not want to comply with the AGPL:
- You want to offer MTL Explorer as a hosted service (SaaS) to third parties without publishing your modifications and your full corresponding source code (including changes to the server, APIs, frontend, tiles pipeline, etc.) under AGPL-3.0.
- You want to embed MTL Explorer (or any part of it) in a proprietary product (including mobile apps, firmware, in-vehicle systems, outdoor hardware, closed-source SDKs) and distribute that product under terms other than AGPL.
- You want to combine MTL Explorer with code under a license that is incompatible with AGPL-3.0 and distribute the combined work.
- You want to remove the AGPL network-use clause obligations (e.g. the requirement that users interacting with the application over a network be offered the corresponding source code).
- You require a commercial warranty, indemnification, SLA, or support contract that the AGPL explicitly disclaims.
Self-hosting MTL Explorer for your own private, personal, or internal non-commercial use is always free under the AGPL and does not require a commercial license.
When do you NOT need a commercial license?
You do not need a commercial license to:
- Run MTL Explorer on your own computer or home server for personal use.
- Fork, modify, and redistribute MTL Explorer under the AGPL-3.0, provided you publish your complete corresponding source code under the same license and preserve all copyright and license notices.
- Contribute improvements back to the upstream project (see CONTRIBUTING.md).
- Run MTL Explorer inside a company for purely internal, non-public, employee- only use - as long as no third parties (customers, partners, the public) interact with it over a network. (If in doubt, contact us.)
