What you can do with MTL Explorer.

Load up thousands of tracks on a single map. Switch the same archive between year views, activity types, photos, custom filters, and planning views.

Explore

Segments

Check segment times.

Create virtual checkpoints to measure your speed between specific locations on the map.

  • Draw segment checkpointsDrop markers on any trail. The app finds every past track that crossed them.
  • Segment resultsCheck detailed graphs to compare your speed across all tracks that hit those checkpoints.
  • Analyze effortCompare distances and pacing on overlapping route sections.
  • Race modeVisually replay tracks against each other directly on the map.

How it works.

Set up the server, import your files, and start exploring.

1

Import your files

Drop files into a folder or import from Garmin. It supports GPX, FIT, TCX, KML/KMZ, IGC, NMEA, GeoJSON, and GDB.

2

Automated processing

The app indexes your files, removes duplicates, and spots bad data points in the background.

3

Map and analyze

Use filters to find what you want. Click tracks to check speed, distance, or mechanical energy spent.

4

Route planning

Draw point-by-point routes directly on the map. Save them as GPX files for your next trip.

Guides for building your archive.

Review import options, supported files, the private heatmap, and the background of the project.

Open source and self-hosted.

You control the server and the data. No external accounts are required to use the core tools.

Keep it local

All your GPS files and photos stay on your hardware. You do not have to share your history with anyone.

  • Open source (AGPL) with a commercial license option.
  • Runs in Docker. The API, database, and map tiles remain local.
  • Basic offline support. You can view cached tracks if you lose internet.
